  Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event, typically lasting several hours (or even days), in which a large number of people meet to code and show off their products.

Do I need to know how to code?

Nope! If you already know how to code, that's great! However, if you don't know how to code, this is the perfect time to learn. We will be hosting beginner workshops for you, and we will have experienced mentors to help you with your hacks!

How do teams work?

You can work individually or work in a team of up to 4! If you don't know anyone participating at the hackathon, don't worry! There will be many other people in the same situation as you. We highly recommend you reach out to other hackers on the slack workspace and form teams. You won't have to register as a team, just register individually. When it's time to submit your project, you can add the names of all your teammates there!

What can my team make?

Your team has the freedom of making whatever you desire! In addition to our sponsored prompts, we will be having 2 other prompts you can submit your hack in: one for coronavirus related hacks, and another for best overall hack!

How much does it cost?

DefHacks is completely free for all hackers. Additionally, we will be providing DefHacks swag, and swag from the sponsors that have made this event possible.

What do I need for the hackathon?

The only thing you need is a device to access our slack website, and any materials needed for creating your hack!

Can I volunteer as a mentor or judge?

Yes! DefHacks wouldn't be possible without our volunteers. We will open mentor and judge sign ups soon, and you can get notified when it opens by signing up for email updates above!
